Singer/Songwriter Dean Bradford's late adopted mother, Eddie Mae, grew up sharecropping the caliche dust of Coleman, Texas, rising before dawn to hear the songbirds sing. She couldn't carry a tune herself, so she borrowed their songs to get through the long days. When someone told her "... the Songbirds of Sunset Boulevard are the most talented birds alive," she followed the rumor west. Eddie Mae soon discovered those gifted creatures were almost always up to no good. Talent and trouble often kept the same address.
Born in Hollywood just off Sunset, his teenage mother sang him into the world and left; Eddie Mae found him alone singing in the nest and brought him home. Melodies lived in him from the start, until an executive told him he "didn't have the face for music," and that verdict lodged itself deep: long enough to make him hide from the songs in his heart. When Eddie Mae passed in 2020, he didn't cry. He sang. He wrote 200 songs and built his entire world around the very Songbirds that once lured her west.
Hatched from one bad face done asking for permission to exist, Dean's music clawed up from the sinkhole at the intersection of feral indie pop and alt-R&B. Songbirds of Sunset is part band, part mythology, assembled from old friends, new accomplices, some vile but talented enemies and at least one imaginary friend who refused to retire.
